The climb, one scroll through
Built with three.js, React Three Fiber
What the recording shows
One scroll through the climb as it runs inside this site: the Wanderer at the trailhead
under the night sky, the first light and the Footholds, the Phoenix igniting at the midpoint, the
Camps, and the summit where the firebird fills the sky over the closing principle and the
contact links. The scroll is scripted (scripts/capture-climb.mjs: a 24 second ease from the top
of the island to its end, with a two second hold before and after), so the pace is steady rather
than a person’s hand. The 36 seconds also include the first eight or so while the models loaded
after the door was pressed. There is no audio track; the climb has no sound.
How it was made
Recorded with Playwright’s video capture at 1440 by 900 against the built site, then encoded with
ffmpeg to this site’s video rules: H.264, CRF 23, capped at 5 Mbps, no audio, faststart so the
player can begin before the file finishes. The result is 36 seconds, 25 frames per second, 0.8
Mbps, and 3.6 MB, under the 5 MB limit for a self-hosted clip. Nothing downloads until you press
play.
What it does not show
The five concept films of the original Camps beat and the summit’s far mountain vista are not in the ported climb yet, because their provenance is not recorded; the cards and the procedural ridges stand in their place. The exhibit entry lists every difference from the first version.
Credits and process
- Source
- The author's own screen recording of the ported climb on this site, made with Playwright at 1440 by 900 on 2026-09-12 (a scripted scroll of 24 seconds with a pause at each end), encoded with ffmpeg. The scene contains the Wanderer and the Phoenix (Tripo base meshes finished in Blender by the author) and Higgsfield atmosphere plates, each recorded in public/climb/provenance.yaml.
